Laser Plastic Welding

This technique requires one part to be transmissive to a laser beam and either the other part absorptive or a coating at the interface to be absorptive to the beam. The two parts are put under pressure while the laser beam moves along the joining line.
The beam passes through the first part and is absorbed by the other one or the coating to generate enough heat to soften the interface creating a permanent weld.
Semiconductor diode lasers are typically used in plastic welding. Wavelengths in the range of 808 nm to 980 nm can be used to join various plastic material combinations. Power levels from less than 1W to 100W are needed depending on the materials, thickness, and desired process speed.

Diode laser systems have the following advantages in joining plastic materials

Transparent Laser Plastic Welding

New fiber laser technology allows for the output of longer laser wavelengths, with the best results typically around 2,000 nm, significantly longer than the average 808 nm to 1064 nm diode laser used for traditional laser plastic welding.[citation needed] Because these longer wavelengths are more readily absorbed by thermoplastics than the infra-red radiation of traditional plastic welding, it is possible to weld two clear polymers without any colorants or absorbing additives. Common Applications will mostly fall in the medical industry for devices like catheters and microfluidic devices. The heavy use of transparent plastics, especially flexible polymers like TPU, TPE, and PVC, in the medical device industry makes transparent laser welding a natural fit. Also, the process requires no laser absorbing additives or colorants making testing and meeting biocompatibility requirements significantly easier.

Specific applications include sealing/welding/joining of: catheter bags, medical containers, automobile remote control keys, heart pacemaker casings, syringe tamper-evident joints, headlight or taillight assemblies, pump housings, and cellular phone parts.

Solar Panel Welding

For flat plate solar energy collectors, the aluminium sheet and copper tube is thin, traditional welding will cause irregularity in welding depth, blemish, and destroy the covering film of the collector.

Pillow Welding

The Pillow Plate (or thermo plate) consists of two steel plates, connected by laser welding. After being welded together, the plate is inflated by using water pressure. The water pressure creates a specific single or double embossed profile – the pillow plate, through which the cooling or heating medium is conducted. While the thickness and the spot pattern are determined by the design pressure.

Electronic Laser Welding

Terminal (negative and positive) are the two parts connecting between connector and circuit. It can also be welded to make a module or pack in a certain design. These parts should also be well handled to have good current transmitting property. Therefore, fiber laser/hybrid wave welding is the best.

Tailor Blank Welding

Tailored blanks are semi-finished parts, which are typically made from sheets with different alloys, thicknesses, coatings, or material properties. After joining, these will be subjected to deep drawing or stamping.

Tailored blanks are used to make items such as door panels which are thick near the hinges and thin near the lock to withstand different types of loads or corrosion attacks.
They are lighter and often cheaper than conventional sheets. Tailored Blanks are typically made from steel. Aluminium and dissimilar material tailored blanks are also available but less common.

Tailor Welded Blanks (TWB) are welded from different sheets in the butt joint configuration. This is normally achieved by laser welding.

Laser beam welding (LBW) is a welding technique used to join pieces of metal or thermoplastics through the use of a laser. The beam provides a concentrated heat source, allowing for narrow, deep welds and high welding rates. The process is frequently used in high-volume applications using automation, such as in the automotive industry. It is based on keyhole or penetration mode welding.

5 Axis CNC Automation

The laser optics and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) are used to direct the material or the laser beam generated. A typical commercial laser for cutting materials involved a motion control system to follow a CNC or G-code of the pattern to be cut onto the material. Projection welding is usually performed using a special band of near-infrared lasers, which can travel through most colourless polymer materials. The welding process occurs on an overlapping lap structure: a suitable colouring (absorption) layer is superimposed under a transparent thermoplastic layer. The laser beam passes through the first layer of material, and the absorption layer at the junction of the two layers absorbs the laser beam radiation and completes the welding.

Laser Peening

Laser Peening is a process in which a laser beam is pulsed upon a metal surface, producing a planar shock wave that travels through the workpiece and plastically deforms a layer of material. The depth of plastic deformation thus resulting in compressive residual stress is significantly deeper than possible with most other surface treatments.

Laser energy can be used to induce residual compressive stress deep into the metal’s surface layer. The Laser Peening process employs laser-induced shocks to create compressive residual stress of over 0.040 inch (1 mm) deep with magnitudes comparable to shot peening. This provides a damage-tolerant component that is more resistant to various forms of stress-related failures.

Laser Peening typically provides 4x or more the depth of residual compressive stress obtained by shot peening. Deeper levels of compressive stress provide greater resistance to fatigue and corrosion failure.

laser hardening

This makes Laser hardening cleaner and more readily mobilised than traditional heat treatments.

Any ferrous metal (steel or cast iron) which would normally be hardened by more traditional methods like flame or induction hardening, can be hardened with a Laser. Laser hardening is more versatile than flame hardening ore induction hardening.

Laser hardening provides reliable, repeatable, non-contact and energy-efficient heat in a minimalamount of time. For hardening, laser beam provides the necessary control and accuracy tofocus the heat to a specific area of the part. The laser is suitable for the integration in alreadyexisting manufacturing equipment’s and production lines.

Apart from the traditional hardening process, laser hardening offers a range of applications for tasks which couldn’t be solved hitherto optimally for example for components with special forms and special functional surfaces (survey of the hardening tracks):

Selective hardening of single work piece surfaces. Here a selective hard surface arises with a tough center and uninfluenced areas in the direct neighborhood.
Hardening tracks at cutting edges, guide tracks, grooves and free mould surfaces withcontinuous crossing geometry
Good hardenability of surfaces which are difficult to reach such as craned grooves, flutesand interior surfaces
Dot hardening at naps and in blind holes
Hardenability of thin, warp-prone parts by a selective, quick heat input at an extremely shortdwell time.

LASER CLADDING MACHINE

Laser hardening is a method aimed at improving component wear behaviour.

During laser hardening, also known as surface layer hardening, the energy from the laser beam is applied directly to the component surface. The surface layer is heated up to the hardening temperature (>1000°C) in a reduced area within a very short time.

One advantage of using a laser is that the amount of heat input is comparatively low, so heat is transmitted into the base material relatively quickly. Self-quenching is produced as a martensitic structure is formed and the hardening layer is ‘cooled.’

A very tough, fine-grained structure is created thanks to the high heat-up rate during laser hardening. The risk of cracks forming is very low thanks to self-quenching. The precisely focused energy ensures that the component is subject to a comparatively low impact from heat, bringing a great advantage in minimum quench distortion.

Die Board laser Cutting

This machinery configuration consists of a moving table along the two X and Y axis and a fixed head that guarantees constant cutting on the entire surface being machined.

In the knowledge that the ambient air is likely to alter the mechanical characteristics of the metals to be welded, laser welding in the glove box will allow you to operate in a safe atmosphere. In this enclosure, the welding area is surrounded by a shielding gas such as argon, helium or a mixture of these two gases in order to protect it.

The role of the glove box for welding
The gas purification unit controls the moisture and oxygen content in ppm to ensure that the strength and quality of the assembly comply with current standards. The role of the glove box is, therefore, to confine the area away from the air and prevent the propagation of these protective cases. There is a reduction in the heat-affected zone (HAZ), less coloration on the parts to be assembled, better mechanical resistance of the weld over time and greater precision. Pillow Laser Wedling

MLS Plate Weld is specially designed to weld dimple/ pillow plates. Pillow plates are heat exchanger panels in single embossed as well as double embossed format used for chillers, evaporators and cooling or heating tanks.

The MLS Plate weld can be equipped with a high power Fiber or a CO2 laser from Trumpf or Rofin/Coherent, both world-leading laser suppliers with an excellent reputation in performance and service. The Zenna Plateweld is equipped with one or two laser heads. With the use of two laser heads, the welding time is significantly reduced.

The MLS Plateweld support a plate-width of 1.500, 2.000 or 2.500 mm wide, the length is basically unlimited. For the transport of the pillow plate MLS supplies in and outfeed tables. For the heavier panels, we use motorized tables.

Hybrid Welding

Laser Hybrid welding is a type of welding process that combines the principles of laser beam welding and arc welding. The combination of laser light and an electrical arc into an amalgamated welding process has existed since the 1970s, but has only recently been used in industrial applications.

There are three main types of hybrid welding process, depending on the arc used: TIG, plasma arc or MIG augmented laser welding. While TIG-augmented laser welding was the first to be researched, MIG is the first to go into industry and is commonly known as hybrid laser welding.

Whereas in the early days laser sources still had to prove their suitability for industrial use, today they are standard equipment in many manufacturing enterprises. The combination of laser welding with another weld process is called a “hybrid welding process”. This means that a laser beam and an electrical arc act simultaneously in one welding zone, influencing and supporting each other.

Laser Hybrid process

For welding metallic objects, the laser beam is focused to obtain intensities of more than 1 MW/cm2. When the laser beam hits the surface of the material, this spot is heated up to vaporization temperature, and a vapor cavity is formed in the weld metal due to the escaping metal vapor. This is known as a keyhole. The extraordinary feature of the weld seam is its high depth-to-width ratio. The energy-flow density of the freely burning arc is slightly more than 100 kW/cm2. Unlike a dual process where two separate weld processes act in succession, hybrid welding may be viewed as a combination of both weld processes acting simultaneously in one and the same process zone. Depending on the kind of arc or laser process used, and depending on the process parameters, the two systems will influence each other in different ways.

The combination of the laser process and the arc process results in an increase in both weld penetration depth and welding speed (as compared to each process alone). The metal vapor escaping from the vapor cavity acts upon the arc plasma. Absorption of the laser radiation in the processing plasma remains negligible. Depending on the ratio of the two power inputs, the character of the overall process may be mainly determined either by the laser or by the arc.
